Meggie the Miracle Dog

Ten year old collie cross Meggie has just been given the all clear after pioneering surgery to save her leg at Shrewsbury Pet Hospital.

Meggie lost one back leg because of a dislocated hip when quite young and had lived as a three legged dog for some years. Tragically, in March, the same injury happened in Meggie's one remaining back leg. Standard surgery to replace the ligament that keeps the hip in place initially worked well but the hip became unstable again after a few weeks.

Meggie's owner, Miss Evans, was faced with a difficult decision. Meggie would have to be confined to a canine Kart or give Meggie a new hip. The chances of successfully giving Meggie a hip replacement that would withstand the pressure that two hips should normally take, was slim but Miss Evans opted for the £2,500 surgery. Meggie's hip replacement was performed at Shrewsbury Pet Hospital by Mr Bedford and his team, using a new technique that locks the artificial ball and socket in place without any need for bone cement.
Meggie has had strictly controlled exercise for the last three months but has now been given the all clear to run again. 'Meggie's just as good as she was before the injury now, maybe even better' says Miss Evans, ' I can't thank everyone at Pearl enough'

Mr Bedford is not aware of any other canine amputees in which this type of hip replacement has been successfully used before, so Meggie could be a world first!

Everyone at Pearl is overjoyed to know that Meggie has made a great recovery and to see her up and running around again is just brilliant.
