Most eye conditions, from medical problems and surgery to cataract removal, can now be treated.
We have full diagnostic facilities and a dedicated ophthalmology theatre to ensure excellent care for your pet.
Cataract removal by phacoemulsification, with silicone lens implant, is now a very successful operation in both dogs and cats. This highly specialised surgery needs careful assessment of patients beforehand.
Many other operations like entropion (lid) surgeries, nictitans gland (cherry eye) replacement and grafting will benefit from our facilities and expertise.
Please ring to discuss your pet’s needs.
British Veterinary Association/Kennel Club/ISDS Eye Testing
This scheme is run jointly by these organisations to examine eyes across the various dog breeds for any evidence of hereditary disease, prior to breeding. Litter screening of puppies is also available.
A certificate is issued on examination, which is valid for the next 12 months.
The examination is a relatively short procedure, which usually takes around 10 minutes and does not need sedation, only drops to dilate the dog’s pupils. Some breeds need an extra procedure (gonioscopy) to assess the drainage angle of the eye and risk of glaucoma.
Many breeds are affected by more than one hereditary disease and, if you’re thinking of breeding, it is most important to be well informed. If you require any advice, please ring us on or contact your breed club who should also be able to offer advice.
